What is TreeListers SA?
TreeListers SA is the place for anyone who loves trees — from curious beginners to seasoned tree spotters. TreeListers SA lets you track, share and celebrate every tree you find and the more you do it, the more fun it gets.
No photos? No GPS coordinates?
TreeListers is built on an honour system designed for pure enjoyment and personal challenge.. You do not need to undergo a strict verification process or remember exactly where you saw a tree. Just tick the box for the national ranking, and optionally select the province where you spotted it.
Flexible search
You do not need to be a botanist to use TreeListers. Tree names can be displayed in two languages, interchangeable at any time. You can search for trees using whatever name you know best: Scientific botanical names (following the latest BODATSA updates), English, Afrikaans (aligned with the Dendrological Society) or common names.
Verified database
Get access to an online master list of 1,273 indigenous tree species found across South Africa. Every single species on the platform has been verified by the Botanical Database of Southern Africa (BODATSA) and the Dendrological Society of South Africa, ensuring you are working with the most accurate, up-to-date botanical data.
100% free and open to everyone
TreeListers is an initiative designed to encourage any- and everyone to discover the pleasures of identifying indigenous trees. It is completely free to use, and you do not need to belong to any formal society or group to get started.
Interactive ranking
Your profile automatically compares and ranks your sightings with other users on our rankings page. You can choose to join specific groups to engage in friendly competition with others in your province, or choose to keep your profile entirely private—the choice is completely yours.
